A report prepared for the United States Conference of Mayors predicts that the foreclosure crisis in the Manchester-Nashua New Hampshire area will decrease economic growth in 2008 by 1.4 percent in that metropolitan area, the Telegram, Nashua's newspaper, reported November 29, 2007.
Only five other metropolitan areas were predicted to have a bigger reduction in economic growth. The survey covered 276 metropolitan areas. The Manchester-Nashua area's economy still is expected to grow 2.2 percent. A majority of the expected hardest hit areas are in California or Florida, where the housing market has been mercilessly pummeled.
Not everyone agrees with the report.
"'I have one word for that: nonsense,' said Peter
Francese, director of demographic forecasting for the New England
Economic Partnership in Waltham, Mass.
"'The idea that Manchester (and Nashua) ranks up
there with California and Florida and Michigan metros is just silly,'
Francese said."
At No. 6, the Manchester-Nashua, NH area is the only New
England area in the 40 worst-hit regions; Bangor, Maine is 42nd, and
Boston is 44th.
